Eighteen-year-old Brooklyn never knew her father. Rex Blackburn died in the 9/11 attacks four months before she was born.

And even though she never met him, she always dreamed about what he must have been like before he died. In her mind, he was a hero.

Little did she know.

After an attack at a 9/11 memorial gala, Brooklyn learns her father had been a member of an elite, anti-terrorism, military task force, made up of a very select group of people who had superhuman abilities. On the day the towers fell, he died using his power to save people.

The Army believes she inherited his gift, and Brooklyn is invited to train at West Point in order to hone her skills. Knowing deep down she is different than anyone else her age and wanting to learn more about a father she never knew, she readily agrees to become a cadet at the prestigious military academy.

She and five other 9/11 babies strengthen their superhuman abilities and spend weeks preparing themselves for their future in the army, fighting terrorists at home and abroad. And in the process of training, they identify with their deceased parents in a way they never knew they could.

Brooklyn knows she’ll go to war someday, but when terrorists find out about the group’s gifts, they don’t bother to wait.

They bring the war to West Point.

My Review Of Becoming Brooklyn By Amanda Deich

Blog Tour: Becoming Brooklyn [International Giveaway + Review]

I’ll be the first to admit then when reading this book, I was a bit nervous. 9/11 is a touchy subject for me; as it is the one day when my timeline is flooded with Muslims trying to defend themselves against a crime they did not commit. We can’t even participate in remembering the lives lost without being accused of deaths that we were not responsible for.

In this book though, Deich deftly handles this topic by giving some very, real horrifying experiences a new dystopian twist. One where there was no mention of “extremist Muslim”, nor was it too perversely alluded to. Which was one of the things that made me want to keep reading, and I want to give the author credit for handling this topic with sensitivity.

This story is fast paced and takes off from the very first page. We are there as Brooklyn’s life is turned upside-down, and she learns about teenagers with superpowers; specifically those who were born on 9/11. A bit of a cliché for any dystopia, but Brooklyn herself is a very relatable character and watching her growth from being a misfit to a talented cadet in the army was something that I really loved watching.

I loved the intrigue and suspense that the author weaved in with the plot. The story was a perfect balance of action, thriller and your cheesy teenage drama with a bit of romance sprinkled in. Although there was a bit of insta-love going on, I liked that it did not take away from the main premise of the plot.

My only gripe with this story was that I felt like there needed to be a clearer explanation and build-up for the science fiction aspect of this book. That, and the fact that nearly everyone in the military were these honest, patriotic heroes is something that I always have a hard time swallowing. While I understand the respect that must be paid to veterans, I find it more interesting when writers take bigger risks and go into the darker side of what makes these soldiers the tough women and men that they are.

All in all, Becoming Brooklyn is a quick, fast read for anyone who looking for a science fiction novel that’s action packed and full of intriguing spies and conspiracies.
